I've watched more than three thousand babies grow on a screen. Then families started asking me to be there when those babies arrived.

How this started

It began in a dark room.

I opened Blooming Bellies as an ultrasound studio.

For months I sat with moms in a dark room and watched their babies move on a screen. I learned their names. Their fears. The questions they were too nervous to ask their doctor.

And I kept hearing the same sentence. I wish you could be there when I deliver.

So I became a doula.

That was the beginning. But two things kept coming up that I couldn’t fix by working harder.

The first was distance. Moms found me from Texas, from New York, from other countries, and I had nothing to offer them. So I built virtual support. The same preparation and the same guidance, from anywhere.

The second was cost. I watched families walk away from support they wanted because of a number. That one took longer to solve. Blooming Bellies now bills private insurance and Medicaid for birth support, so there’s a second way in for families whose coverage will carry it.

I still scan. I’m still at births. And I still remember every mom who was told this wasn’t for her.

Rosy is the Program Manager for the Maternal Health Medical Assisting certification at Heritage School of Midwifery, the same program she completed herself.

Rosy serves on the Doula Friendly consultation board, which partners with Jackson Memorial Hospital. She also presents to expecting moms through the Early Learning Coalition.
